During its long history, China has created not only massive material wealth but
also colourful national culture and arts, embodied through all the remarkable
achievements found in its literature, calligraphy, painting, music, dance, drama,
movie, traditional crafts, traditional medicine, and architecture.
As one of The Four Great Ancient Civilizations in the world, China has been
known for its unique and original Yellow River Culture tracing back to 5,000
years ago, featuring a great variety of charming and lasting forms of art, from the
coloured pottery in the primitive society and the bronze art of the Xia-Shang-Zhou
Age to the Qin terracotta army, from the Han stone and brick carvings and the
grotto arts in the Northern Dynasties to the Buddhist sculptures and calligraphy
in the Jin and Tang Dynasties, from the Tang and Song poetry and Song and Yuan
landscape paintings to the dramatic recital and singing, and opera music in the
Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties. The continuous development and splendid
accomplishments of the nation’s culture and arts have left a unique legacy with
lasting impact even on today’s social life in China

The Chinese culture is one of distinct unity, featuring a coherent combination of
interdependent and interactive cultural forms. Confucius, the world renowned
great cultural master, is not only a man of noble moral integrity, broad knowledge
and great wisdom, but also a superior writer, an experienced politician, and a
skilful artist, sportsman, and military strategist, universally acknowledged as a
real great man of virtue and versatility. As an outstanding educator, thinker,
politician, historian and man of letters, Confucius has created a comprehensive
cultural legacy covering extremely versatile topics, including art, music, archery,
and even cooking and costumes.

TheChinese culture also features a strong conformity to the times, constantly
developing in a way of “endless succession with changes” as originally depict
in The Book of Changes, a classic having influenced the Chinese mentality for
thousands of years. While old forms have been continuously replaced by new
forms, a persistent national spirit has been carried forward in the new forms.
Although some of the old forms have lost their original vitality in the process of
time, they can be reformed in light of the requirements of a new era for further
development. For example, Peking Opera, known as the quintessence of Chinese
culture, has actually become a rather “young”art form, fully developed a
matured during the past hundred or so years.
