15 Days Modern China&Silk Route Adventure

Day 1 
Arrive / Beijing

On arrival, transfer to the 5 star News Plaza Hotel for your overnight stay.

Day 2 
Beijing / Xi'an (B)

Day free for shopping or sightseeing, until your late afternoon transfer to the Beijing Railway Station, to board your overnight train to Xian. You will be travelling in a four berth soft-sleeper compartment. Dinner and beverages can be purchased in the train's restaurant car.

Day 3 
Xi'an  ( B, L )

Arrive in Xian in the early morning. Today's city tour includes visits to the Bell and Drum Towers, the Moslem Quarter, the beautifully preserved City Wall and the Shaanxi History Museum-- one of the best museums in China. Stay in the 4 star Bell Tower Hotel for two nights.

The Bell Tower -- It is a stately traditional building, that marks the geographical center of the ancient capital. From this important landmark extend East, South, West and North Streets, connecting the Tower to the East, South, West and North Gates of the City Wall of the Ming Dynasty.

The City Wall -- Adorned with a moat and the circular park, the wall surrounds the square inner city of Xian. It is the most complete city wall to survive in China, as well being one of the largest ancient military defensive systems in the world, built first in the early Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and renovated in recent years.

Day 4
Xi'an  (B, L )

Morning tour to the world famous Terracotta Warriors archaeological site. After lunch visit the Banpo Museum - located on the site of the 6000 year old Stone Age Banpo Village.

Terra Cotta Warriors and Horses -- The great archeological excavation of Qin (221BC-206BC) Terra Cotta Warriors and Horses unfolded a strong army of altogether 7,000 life-size pottery soldiers, horses, chariots and weapons arranged in battle formations symbolically, guarding the tomb of Emperor Qin Shi Huang.

Day 5 
Xi'an / Lanzhou  (B, L )

Morning free, before transferring to Xi'an Airport for your flight to the historic city of Lanzhou, located on the banks of the Yellow River, in a picturesque setting at the foot of the Lanshan Mountain Range. Stay overnight at the 4 star Feitian Hotel.

Day 6
Lanzhou / Jiayuguan  ( B, L )

Today's City Tour includes visits to White Pagoda Park, Mount Wuqian, the Statue of Mother Huanghe and the old Huanghe Iron Bridge. Late afternoon transfer to the station, to board your four berth soft sleeper compartment on the overnight train to Jiayuguan. Dinner and beverages can be purchased in the train's restaurant car.

The White Pagoda Park -- it owes its name to the amazing White Pagoda within it. With images of Buddha on its eight sides, the seven-story pagoda with a height of 17 meters (about 55.8 feet), is a pure white from top to bottom with the exception of the green top which greatly enhances the glamour of the whole building.

Day 7 
Jiayuguan (B, L )

Arrive in Jiayuguan (the city at the western end of the Great Wall), in the morning, Visit the Jiayuguan Pass, with its impressive Gate Towers and the Overhanging Great Wall, from where you can get sweeping views of the desert, the oasis of Jiayuguan and the snow-capped mountains in the distance.  Stay overnight at the 4 star Jiayuguan Hotel.

Jiayuguan Pass -- Located about six kilometers (four miles) southwest of Jiangyuguan City in Gansu Province, the Jiayuguan Pass (Jiayuguan in Chinese) represents the western starting point of a section of the Great Wall constructed during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). The pass covers an area of 33,500 square meters (eight acres) and lies at the base of a narrow valley, and takes its name from one of the surrounding hills, the Jiayu. Commonly referred to as the finest example of its kind on earth, the pass is the best preserved of the Great Wall's ancient military fortresses.

Day 8
Jiayuguan / Dunhuang  (B, L )

Depart by coach for the 6 hour drive through the desert to Dunhuang ¨C the 2000-year oasis city, regarded by Silk Road travellers as "the first and last city in China". Your sightseeing tour includes visits to the spectacular sand dunes of Echoing-Sand Mountain and Crescent Moon Lake. Overnight accommodation at the Dunhuang Hotel.

Echoing-Sand Mountain -- It is the accumulation of years of sand in the size of rice. Each time the wind blows, there is a sound from the mountain and when there is a breeze, the sound is like musical instruments, hence the name. The most marvelous experience is when after climbing to the top, although quite strenuous, one can slide down to the foot of the mountain, a wonderfully amusing experience!

The Crescent Lake -- lies in the arms of Echoing-Sand Mountain, appearing clear and beautiful. The lake is crescent-shaped, hence the name. It’s surrounded by quicksand. Although it’s quite windy sometimes, the lake has never been covered by the sand. It’s really a marvelous spectacle in the desert.

Day 9 
Dunhuang / Liuyuan / Turpan  (B, L) 

Today's tour takes you to the World Heritage listed Mogao Caves, to see magnificent Buddhist cave paintings and sculptures dating back to the 4th Century AD. After lunch, travel across the desert by coach to Liuyuan to catch the overnight train to Turpan. You will travel in a four berth soft-sleeper compartment. Dinner and beverages can be purchased in the train's restaurant car.

Mogao Caves -- It is regarded as the premier Buddhist spot in China, perhaps in the whole world. The artistic features of the treasured Buddhist murals represent perfectly the artistic style of the Northern Wei (386-543), Sui (581-618) and Tang (618-907) dynasties through the combination of the architecture, statues and murals in the caves. Presently, there are about ten caves and two exhibition centers open to the public, occasionally more during public holidays.

Day 10 
Turpan  (B, L )

Arrive in the oasis city of Turpan in the morning. Today's tour will take you to the Sugong Tower and Islamic Mosque on the edge of the city and the Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves, 50 km to the east.  In the evening enjoy a traditional Uighur music, song and dance show. Overnight at the Liuzhou Hotel.

The Bizaklik Thousand Buddha Caves -- It is one of the most important Buddha grotto relics in Xinjiang Uygur AutonomousRegion. It was built during the Northern and Southern dynasties (386-589) andfor 700 years, it remained the Buddhist center of the Western Regions (the areaincluding what is now Xinjiang and parts of Central Asia).

Day 11 
Turpan / Urumqi  (B, L, )

After breakfast, travel by coach through the picturesque Nanshan grazing area, before travelling on to Urumqi ¨C the furthest city in the world from any ocean. Situated in the foothills of snow capped mountains, Urumqi comprises peoples from more than a dozen different ethnic backgrounds. After lunch, visit the Urumqi Huts (Yurts) belonging to the local Kazakh tribes who live throughout this area of China. Stay at the Yindu Holiday Inn Hotel for two nights.

Day 12
Urumqi  (B, L )

In the morning, travel 115 km east of Urumqi to the stunningly beautiful Heavenly Lake, an alpine lake situated at an elevation of 1980 metres on the slopes of Mount Tian and surrounded by fir trees.

The Heavenly Lake -- Covering 4.9 square kilometers (1.89 square miles), this crescent-shaped lake deserves its name, Pearl of Heavenly Mountain (Tianshan Mountain). With melted snow as its source, Heavenly Lake enjoys crystal water.
 
Day 13 
Urumqi/ Kashgar (B, L )

Morning transfer to Urumqi Airport for your flight to Kashgar—China's westernmost city. Visit the Grand Id Kah Mosque and Abakh Hoja Tomb, en-route to the Kashi Hotel for your overnight stay.

Grand Id Kah Mosque -- 'Id Kah' means 'a place of praying and celebrating in festivals'. The Id Kah Mosque is located on the central square in Kashgar City, Xinjiang Uigur Autonomous Region. As the biggest mosque in China, it is a group of old Islamic constructions with strong ethnic style and religious features.

Abakh Hoja Tomb -- it is an ancient Islamic building nestles among poplar trees. With glazed tiles shining in the sun, its tower points to the azure sky. A masterpiece of Uigur architecture, this is Abakh Khoja Tomb, 17th Century family cemetery of the Kashgar area Islamic leader.

Day 14 
Kashgar / Urumqi  (B, L ) 

As a historic Silk Road border trading town, Kashgar is famous for its street-side stalls and Great Bazaar. Today you will be able to explore these features of the city, before visiting the home of some local residents. After dinner, transfer to the airport for your short flight back to Urumqi. On arrival, transfer to the 4 star Yindu Holiday Inn Hotel for your overnight stay.

Day 15 
Urumqi / Beijing / Exit (B)

Morning transfer to Urumqi Airport for your flights back via Beijing.
