Daxu Ancient Town

Daxu Ancient Town, about 29km by car from Guilin, locates on the north bank of the Li River. With a history  over 1000 years Daxu Ancient Town is one of the four most famous ancient towns in Guangxi province.

According to research, this age-old town was formed at the beginning of the Song dynasty. The two-kilometer long stone street lined with many well maintained buildings runs through the town. These structures, mainly formed in the Ming and Qing dynasties, are famous for their magnificence, refinement and practicality.
While visiting the town, the simple and elegant Longevity Bridge cannot be missed. Built in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), it is a stone arch both natural and simplistic in its beauty. With the Li River at its west side, it is an excellent place to appreciate the charming scenery of the river, the nearby Millstone Hill and Snail Hill across the bank. The commerce in Daxu town first appeared in the Song dynasty and flourished at the end of the Qing dynasty.
There are also many other attractions in this small town: the Gaozu Temple, the Hanhuang Temple built in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), the Assembly Halls, and the Seven Star Tombs. The seven tombs discovered in 1990s add an element of mystery to the ancient town, they were arranged in the form of the Big Dipper constellation and the size of the tombs was designed according to the brightness of the stars. It has been the first case of its kind in China. And the relationship between the tomb and the Big Dipper constellation remains a mystery. However, one thing is for certain: the funeral objects excavated from the tombs are of great value. In addition, many scenes of the famous film 'Sanjie Liu' were shot on location in the town. As such, the area is now quite popular with many films and TV serials. The local food, customs, entertainment and traditional culture will also leave one with a lasting impression.
